Mental health SEO

SEO for mental health clinics, psychologists and therapists

Patients and referrers search for something specific: an assessment, a therapy, a clinician, a town. We make sure your clinic has a clear, trustworthy page for each of those searches, and that Google can tell who stands behind it.

Why mental health SEO is its own discipline

Search engines treat health information as a category where mistakes can cause real harm. Google’s guidance to its quality raters calls these “Your Money or Your Life” topics and asks raters to look closely at experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. A generic page with no named author and vague promises is unlikely to compete with one written or reviewed by an identifiable, registered clinician that explains exactly what happens and what it costs.

There are limits other businesses do not have. You cannot publish case studies about patients. You should not make outcome claims. Your clinicians’ titles must match their registration. Done well, those limits push you towards the content patients and search engines both value: honest, specific and written by people who know the subject.

The searches that matter to a clinic

Most clinic enquiries start from a handful of search patterns. Each deserves a page that answers it properly.

Service and place

“private psychologist Leeds”, “adult ADHD assessment Manchester”. Service pages and Google Business Profile carry these.

Service and person

“psychologist for teenagers with anxiety”, “EMDR therapist for trauma”. Specific service and clinician pages answer them.

Clinician name

Patients and GPs look up the person they were recommended. Clinician pages and directory profiles should agree.

Cost and process

“how much is a private autism assessment”, “what happens at a first counselling session”. Clear fee and process pages earn trust.

Comparison and reviews

“best ADHD clinic near me”, “clinic name reviews”. These are now often answered by AI tools, from many sources at once.

Referrer searches

GP surgeries, schools and employers looking for a service to refer to. A clear referrals page helps them.

What we work on

Service pages that answer the question

One page per service, rewritten in your clinic’s voice from your clinicians’ knowledge: who it is for, what happens, how long it takes, who delivers it, what it costs, what happens next and how to book. Plain words first, clinical terms explained.

Clinician pages with facts that can be checked

Name, profession, registration body and number where one applies, qualifications, specialisms, age groups, languages, availability and approach. These help patients choose and give AI tools facts to match against professional registers.

Local search

A complete Google Business Profile for each location where you see patients face to face, consistent names, addresses and phone numbers across directories, and location information that helps people arrive. Our guide to local SEO for therapy practices covers the detail, including the rules for online only services.

Trust signals

Who runs the clinic, clinical governance, complaints, CQC registration and rating where it applies, privacy and safeguarding information, and clear authorship and review dates on clinical content.

Structured data

Schema.org markup for your organisation, locations, clinicians, services and FAQs, matching what each page shows. It does not guarantee anything, but it helps machines read your facts without guessing.

Technical health

Pages that load quickly on phones, no broken links or blocked pages, a sitemap, sensible titles and descriptions, and a check every month. Where a fix needs your web developer, we write the brief. See clinic websites for how we work with your existing site.

A ten minute self check

Your own website will tell you a lot.

  • Search for your main service and town in a private browser window. Is your service page the result, or your home page?
  • Can a patient find the fee for an assessment or first appointment in two clicks?
  • Does every clinician have a page with registration, specialisms and who they see?
  • Are waiting times stated, and dated, anywhere on the site?
  • Is it clear which services are face to face, online or both?
  • Do your clinic name, address and phone number match on Google, directories and your site?
  • Does clinical content say who wrote or reviewed it, and when?

If several answers are no, those are usually the first fixes, and they help with AI tools as much as with Google.

SEO and AI search are now one job

A clinic that is hard to understand on Google is usually hard to understand in AI answers too. We plan the two together and measure both. Read more about AI search visibility.

Questions clinic owners ask

What is mental health SEO?

Search engine optimisation for mental health services: making sure a clinic’s pages can be found, understood and trusted by Google for the searches patients and referrers make, such as an assessment, a therapy or a type of clinician in a particular town.

How is SEO for therapists and psychologists different from other businesses?

Google holds health content to a higher standard because it can affect people’s wellbeing. Pages need clear authorship by qualified people, accurate wording, transparent fees and processes, and no exaggerated claims. Confidentiality also limits what you can publish.

Does SEO still matter now that people use ChatGPT?

Yes. Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Gemini and Perplexity all draw on web pages that search engines can find and trust. The same clear, well structured pages tend to help in both places.

How long does SEO take for a mental health clinic?

Fixing facts, listings and technical problems can show within weeks. Pages that hold their place for competitive searches usually take several months. Anyone who promises a ranking by a date is guessing.

Should every clinician have their own page?

In a clinic with a team, usually yes. A page for each clinician with qualifications, registration, specialisms, who they see and how to book helps patients choose and gives search engines and AI tools clear facts.

Do you do local SEO for counsellors and therapy practices?

Yes. Google Business Profile for each location where you see people face to face, consistent details across directories, and location information that is useful to patients. Online only services are not eligible for a Google Business Profile, so we focus elsewhere for them.
