How to get your clinic recommended by ChatGPT

An honest, practical guide for UK mental health clinics. Nobody can make an AI tool name your clinic. You can make your clinic much easier to find, check and describe, and then measure what happens.

Start with how the answers are made

When someone asks ChatGPT “which private psychologist in Leeds sees teenagers for anxiety?”, the tool does not look up a ranked list. Depending on the tool and the question, it draws on what it learned in training, searches the web for current pages, or both. It then writes an answer that names the services it can describe with some confidence.

Confidence is the key word. AI tools are cautious with health questions. They tend to name clinics whose facts they can find in more than one place, that agree with each other, and that match the details in the question: the town, the age group, the service, whether it is online.

That gives you a practical goal. Make it easy for any tool to find out who you are, what you offer, for whom, where, at what cost and who delivers it, and make sure every source tells the same story.

Step 1: find out what AI tools say about you now

Write down five to ten questions your patients really ask. Your reception team will know them. Include your town and the services you most want to be known for. For example:

“Where can I get a private adult ADHD assessment in Manchester?”

Tests whether your service, town and adult pathway are clear.

“Is there a counsellor in Bristol who works with grief online?”

Tests specialism, format and location together.

“How much does a private psychiatrist cost in London?”

Tests whether your fees can be found and read.

Ask each question in ChatGPT and in Gemini, several times, ideally on different days. Answers vary from run to run. Note which clinics are named, how they are described and, where the tool shows them, which sources it used. Do this before you change anything, so you have a baseline.

Step 2: make your own website the clearest source

Your website should be the most complete and current description of your clinic anywhere. In practice, for a clinic with a team, that means:

Our guide to what patients ask AI before choosing a clinic lists the questions and where each answer should live.

Step 3: make every other source agree

AI tools check what they find against other sources. If your website says one fee, Google Business Profile another and a directory a third, the tool has to guess, or leaves you out. Make a master record of your clinic and each clinician, then work through your Google Business Profile, the professional registers and the directories your patients use. Our directory profiles guide covers which matter.

Step 4: make your credentials easy to check

Health questions make AI tools look for signs of legitimacy. Link each clinician’s page to their entry on the HCPC or GMC register or their accredited register. Describe CQC registration accurately and show your rating if you have one. Say who runs the clinic, how to complain and how you handle confidentiality. These are also what regulators and patients expect.

Step 5: earn mentions from sources AI tools trust

What others say about you carries more weight than what you say about yourself. Useful independent mentions for a clinic include local news, expert comment in national and trade publications, podcasts, professional body articles and genuine reviews on independent platforms.

The honest route is expert comment: your clinicians answering journalists’ and producers’ questions within their competence. Never buy articles that pretend to be independent, never write or incentivise reviews, and never let anyone comment on a person they have not assessed.

Step 6: add structured data

Structured data, using schema.org, describes your clinic, locations, clinicians, services and FAQs in a format machines can read. It should only describe what each page already shows. It will not make a tool recommend you, but it removes guesswork about your facts.

Step 7: check again, the same way, every month

Ask the same questions, in the same tools, the same number of times. Record the results with dates. Look for changes in whether you are named, how you are described and which sources are cited. If an answer is wrong, trace it to the source and fix the source.

Doing this every month

This is ongoing work, not a one off project. Services change, clinicians join and leave, fees and waits move, and AI tools change how they answer. Our Essentials plan runs the monthly check and report for you, and Growth and Partner do the work as well. You can get started with a free trial, or read more about AI search visibility.

Questions clinic owners ask

Can I pay to have my clinic recommended by ChatGPT?

Not in its ordinary answers. ChatGPT, Gemini and similar tools build answers from sources they find and judge reliable. Be wary of anyone offering a paid or guaranteed placement in AI answers.

How long does it take for changes to show in AI answers?

It varies. Correcting a wrong fact in a directory or on your site can show within weeks once the source is updated and read again. Independent mentions and reputation build over months. Some tools update faster than others.

Should I write content specifically for AI tools?

Write for patients. Clear answers to the questions patients ask, in plain words, with facts that can be checked, are exactly what AI tools look for. Content stuffed with keywords or written only for machines tends to help nobody.

Does ChatGPT use Google to find clinics?

AI tools use a mix of their own training data and live web search, and the details differ between tools and change over time. What is consistent is that they favour information they can find in several places and that agrees.

Is it worth checking Gemini as well as ChatGPT?

Yes. Answers differ between tools, and Gemini is closely connected to Google’s own data, including business profiles. We check both every month for that reason.
