AI search visibility for mental health clinics

How mental health clinics get recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini

You cannot make an AI tool recommend your clinic. You can make your clinic easy to find, easy to check and easy to describe accurately. That is what AI search visibility means, and it is the work we do every month.

What has changed for clinics

For years a patient looking for help typed a few words into Google and read through a page of results. Now many ask an assistant in a full sentence, with details a search box never saw: their age, their town, whether they want online sessions, whether they have a GP referral, what they can afford.

The assistant answers in a paragraph. It might name two or three clinics and explain why each could suit. Some tools show the sources they used and others do not. Either way, the patient may decide who to contact before they ever see your website.

Being described well in these answers goes by several names: GEO (generative engine optimisation), AEO (answer engine optimisation) and AI SEO. They describe the same job. For mental health clinics it builds on good SEO rather than replacing it.

How AI tools choose which clinics to name

Each tool works differently and none publishes its full method. Across the answers we check, the same pattern keeps appearing.

The question

“Is there a psychologist in Bristol who sees teenagers for anxiety?”

  • Your websiteServices, fees, clinicians, process
  • DirectoriesPsychology Today, BACP, Doctify
  • ReviewsGoogle and other review sites
  • Press and podcastsLocal news, expert comment
  • RegistersHCPC, GMC, CQC
The answer

Names the clinics whose facts it can find, check and match to the question.

AI tools look for sources that agree. Clinics with clear, consistent facts in several places are easier to name with confidence.

Five things that make a clinic easy to recommend

1. Facts it can find

Services, who delivers them, age groups, face to face or online, locations, fees, waiting times and how to book, written in plain words on pages a crawler can read. A PDF price list or a booking widget is not enough on its own.

2. Facts that agree

If your website says one thing, Google another and a directory a third, an AI tool has to guess, or leaves you out. Consistency across your site, your directory profiles and Google Business Profile matters a great deal.

3. Credentials it can check

Named clinicians with their profession and registration, so a tool can match them against the HCPC or GMC registers, the accredited counselling registers or CQC. Our psychology practice page explains how titles should be presented.

4. Independent mentions

Local press, expert comment in national media, podcasts, professional articles and reviews. AI tools put more weight on what others say about you than on what you say about yourself. On Growth and Partner we approach the publications, podcasts and websites AI tools quote, and offer your clinicians for comment where it fits their expertise.

5. Answers to the questions people ask

Pages that answer what patients really ask, from “how long is the wait” to “what happens after an autism diagnosis”. Our guide to what patients ask AI before choosing a clinic lists the common ones and where each answer belongs.

How we check, every month

Opinions about AI visibility are cheap. We measure it the same way each month, so you can see what changes and why.

  1. Agree the questions

We agree a set of patient questions for your specialties and towns, in the words patients use. They stay the same from month to month.

  2. Ask them repeatedly

Our AI asks each question in ChatGPT and Gemini several times, because a single answer can be a fluke.

  3. Record names and sources

Which clinics were named, how each was described, and which sources were cited. All dated.

  4. Review and report

A person on our team reviews the results and writes your monthly report, with advice on what to improve first.

What your monthly report shows

  • The exact questions asked, and when.
  • Whether your clinic was named, and how it was described.
  • Which other clinics were named instead.
  • The sources the answers relied on.
  • What changed since last month.
  • What to fix next, in order of priority.

Every plan includes the monthly check and report. Growth and Partner also include the work. See pricing.

What we will and will not do

  • We will show you the actual answers, not a score without evidence.
  • We will fix your own pages and help correct directory and Google listings.
  • We will put your clinicians forward for expert comment only where it fits.
  • We will not create fake reviews, fake articles or networks of sites that mention you.
  • We will not promise you a place in any AI answer.

Questions clinic owners ask

How do I get my clinic recommended by ChatGPT?

There is no switch to flip and nobody can promise it. ChatGPT and similar tools name clinics they can find clear, consistent and independent information about. Make your services, clinicians, fees, waiting times and locations easy to find and check on your own site, keep directories and Google consistent, and earn mentions from sources AI tools trust. Then check the answers every month to see what changed.

What is GEO?

GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the work of making an organisation easier for AI tools that generate answers, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews, to find, understand and cite. Answer engine optimisation and AI SEO mean much the same thing. All of them build on good SEO.

Is AI SEO for a mental health clinic different from other businesses?

The method is similar, but the stakes are higher. People asking about mental health care are often anxious and need accurate facts, and AI tools are cautious with health questions. Clear credentials, regulation details and careful wording matter more than they would for most businesses.

Do AI tools give the same answer every time?

No. Answers vary between runs, between tools and over time, and can depend on location and wording. That is why we ask each question several times and record the results with dates, rather than relying on one screenshot.

Can we pay to appear in ChatGPT or Gemini answers?

Not in the ordinary answers we check. We do not buy placements, and we would be wary of anyone selling a guaranteed spot in AI answers.

What if an AI tool says something wrong about our clinic?

Find the source. Wrong answers usually trace back to an out of date directory profile, an old page on your site or inconsistent details on Google. Correcting those sources is the reliable fix, and we then check whether the answer changes.
